Doc Evans (2nd from right) with the Carleton band in 1927.
Doc Evans (1907 to 1977) graduated from Carleton College a B.A. in English in 1929. While at Carleton, Doc played with Carleton Collegians, a campus group that played for school dances and various local events. His ability to play piano, sax and drums made him a particularly valuable member of the ensemble. He found a second-hand cornet and began bringing it along to dance jobs, where he would alternate between tenor sax and cornet. "Finally I decided that the cornet was my instrument, and I had to decide what to do about my saxÑso I gave it up."
This centennial celebration of his birth will include a convocation and concert by the Doc Evans Memorial Band (led by Butch Thompson and featuring Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet) on Friday.
Saturday will feature a symposium in the morning morning with John Hasse, Curator of American Music, National Museum of American Music, Smithsonian Institution; Jeffrey Taylor, Associate Professor of Music, Brooklyn College, The City University of New York; and Mark Flaherty, Assistant Professor of Music, Northern Michigan University. A panel discussion in the afternoon will conclude the weekend.
